A Number of Small Fish of No Economic Importance.

Scate

I was browsing my battered copy of ‘Fishes of the British Isles: both Fresh Water and Salt’ by J. Travis Jenkins and I came upon the sentence ‘This chapter deals with a number of small fish of no economic importance.’ It tickled me because the unfortunate fish that was singled out for this rather damning epithet was the seahorse, surely a fish that everyone knows and (mostly) loves.

But economically insignificant.

Or not so insignicant! Came across this monster in La Specola museum in Florence – my husband is there just to give a sense of scale.
